Why you should install solar on your Project:

1. Gain energy independence:

A solar PV system on your home can generate clean energy and savings on your electricity bills for 30+ years and earn you double on your initial investment over the systems life span.

2. Earn credits to decrease your bill:

When you generate excess energy that is fed back into the utility grid, your hydro provider allows you to earn credits through their net-metering program, helping you lower your utility bill.

3. Increase your property value:

A 2018 Kelowna study shows that your home’s property value increases by $6,000 for every 1kW of solar installed.

4. Contribute to a greener future:

When adding a renewable energy system to your home you are actively decreasing your carbon footprint. EV owners can have the cost of their car’s energy consumption covered by the solar panels on their property.

Rebates & Incentives for Homeowners:

The provincial government is consistently offering more incentives to make the transition to renewable energy.

MORE INFO:

Commercial Grid-Tied Solar Electric Systems

The most common setup for commercial solar systems is a grid-tied solar PV system. In the implementation of this system, power is generated by your commercial solar system by harnessing the power of the sun and converting its energy into DC (Direct Current) power. The DC power then travels through an inverter where it is then converted into AC (Alternating Current) and is dispersed throughout your commercial property to energize your businesses appliances.

The benefit of a grid-tied system is that when the solar PV system is not producing sufficient energy to power your business, your commercial property can draw power from the utility grid. However, if your solar PV system is generating excess electricity, it can be fed back into the utility grid for net-metering.

Net-metering is the process of selling your excess renewable energy generated by your solar PV system back to your hydro provider. In turn, your hydro provider will bill you credits that can be used towards your future grid-reliant energy use. It’s as if you were storing your excess solar generated electricity on the utility grid and it will be given back to you when you require its use. If you have leftover credits on your anniversary date, your hydro provider will pay you for the electricity at market price.

Backup Power

In most cases a commercial solar PV system is equipped with a backup generator to power all electrical applications during a blackout period. This can be useful for a variety of commercial properties, including those with climate-controlled warehouses. For instance, if a power outage occurs at a food packing facility, you could potentially lose inventory if freezers are shut down for an extended period of time. With backup power, you won’t have to worry about power outage issues any longer.

SOLAR MONITORING:

KNOW YOUR SYSTEM IS WORKING EFFECTIVELY

The Great Canadian Roof Dr. solar installations include lifetime system monitoring. This monitoring will show you real-time power production of your system – right down to each individual solar module. Monitoring can be access through your smart-phone, tablet, or computer. You can track power production down to a 5 minute cycle.

How is your production and usage tracked?

Grid-tie systems are monitored using a BC Hydro Net-Metering account. Setting up your Net-Metering account is the final step of our turn key renewable energy system solution. The BC Hydro Net-Metering account tracks all excess solar energy developed, and returns it to you in months where solar production slows, thus reducing your bill. No extra energy storage is necessary, however it is optional.

What your bill will look like

As a net metering customer, the electricity you generate is first used by your home or business. Your net consumption of electricity from BC Hydro is recorded under Inflow. When you generate more electricity than you consume, the excess generation is fed back to the grid and shown under Outflow.

Canadian Roof Doctor Solar Panels

SOLAR PANELS

Solar panel cells absorb the sun’s energy in the form of photons and then converts them into electrons, taking the form of DC (direct current) electricity. A solar cell, or PV (photovoltaic) cell is made up of 2 types of silicon that promote positive and negative electrical charges that are surrounded by conducting metals which transfer the electrons. The panel is topped with extremely durable tempered glass allows light in while protecting the PV cell from damage.

MICRO-INVERTERS

Before DC electricity can be sent to the electrical panel it must be converted into AC (alternating current). AC power is used to supply electricity to all connected properties. In order to convert DC power from the solar PV cell into AC power that can be used, the electrical current must pass through an inverter. This is the final step before power can be transferred from the solar panels into your home for everyday use.

Once the inverter converts the power to AC, it can then be sent to the electrical panel. An electrical panel is a component of the electricity supply system that divides electrical power into subsidiary circuits that power appliances, lights, receptacles, etc. throughout the home.

HYDRO METER & UTILITY GRID CONNECTION

In a residential grid-tied solar PV system, a hydro or bidirectional meter controls the flow of energy to or from your electricity supplier. When your solar PV system produces excess electricity it can either be stored in optional backup batteries or it can be sold to your utility provider for credits on your electricity bill (net-metering). When your solar PV system is no longer producing sufficient power to your home, you can still rely on your energy company to provide electricity so you do not experience a blackout.

BACKUP GENERATOR (OPTIONAL)

A backup generator can be implemented in your residential grid-tied solar PV system. A backup generator utilizes a small combustion engine to create electrical current. It can be very useful during a blackout period when no electricity is being produced by the solar PV system, optional backup batteries or the utility grid. With a backup generator, you won’t have to worry about power outage issues any longer.

HYDRO METER & UTILITY GRID CONNECTION

Optional deep cycle batteries could also be utilized in a residential grid-tied solar PV system to store excess DC electricity generated by the solar panels. The energy stored in the backup batteries can then be dispersed during a blackout period when no electricity is being produced by the solar PV system or the utility grid.
